Year 7 Reading & Numeracy Catch Up

The Year 7 catch up funding provided schools with £500 for each Year 7 student who did not achieve at least a Level 4b in reading and numeracy at the end of Key Stage 2.

In September 2015, the number of pupils on catch up for reading were 13 out of a year group of 148. This equates to 9% of the whole year group. 4 of these students were disadvantaged.

The number of pupils on catch-up for numeracy were 6 out of a year group of 148. This equates to 4% of the whole year group. Four of these students were disadvantaged.

The objectives of the funding:

  • To close the attainment gap by providing intensive literacy and numeracy support to students entitled to catch up premium
  • To identify concerns and target intervention and support to accelerate progress

Impact

Reading

  • By the end of the academic year, 70% of this cohort reached 4b or higher. This is the equivalent of 9/13 students.
  • 4 students did not reach a 4b. These students moved from B/N to a 3a.
  • Students who did not meet 4b continue to receive continued support in year 8.
  • 2/4 of disadvantaged students reached a 4b by the end of the academic year.
  • All disadvantaged students made at least 2 or more sublevels progress.

Numeracy

  • By the end of the academic year, 67% of this cohort reached 4b or higher. This is the equivalent of 4/6 students.
  • 2/4 students did not reach a 4b. Both students made progress moving from a B/N to a 2c/2b.
  • Students who did not meet 4b continue to receive support in Year 8.
  • All disadvantaged students reached a 4b by the end of the academic year.

Year 7 Catch Up Funding 2016 – 2017

The Department of Education has announced that in 2016 to 2017 schools will receive the same overall amount of year 7 catch-up premium funding they received in 2015 to 2016, adjusted to reflect the percentage change in the size of their year 7 cohort, based on the October 2016 census.  The cohort size has increased by 37.8%, therefore it is anticipated that the school will receive £8959.46 in funding, this represents a 37.8% increase on the £6500 funding for the 2015-16 academic year.

Due to the change in KS2 grading it is no longer possible to use a level 4b as an indicator of expected progress.  Therefore, we have implemented a support system for students who achieved a score of 99 or under in reading and numeracy in order to ensure that they continue to progress towards the government’s floor standard of 100.

We have targeted 90 students in this cohort:

  • 33 students receive support for reading
  • 23 students receive support for numeracy
  • 34 receive intervention for both reading and numeracy

Progress is monitored at each data collection point.

The objectives of the funding:

  • To close the attainment gap by providing intensive numeracy and reading support to students entitled to catch up premium
  • To identify concerns and target intervention and support to accelerate progress
