Chromebook Scheme – September 2021

As we welcome your child to The Hart School, we are delighted to offer you a fantastic opportunity to be part of the school’s Chromebook scheme. 

Your child will be able to take advantage of a unique package which we have put together, to have a Google Chromebook to use both in school and at home.  

How can I pay for the device?

We are pleased to announce the school will be running a subsidised Chromebook scheme again this September. 

We have secured funding from Rugeley Endowment Trust (RET) fund, enabling the school to reduce the cost of each device by £40

We have been in negotiations with the leading suppliers to bring you the best value for money device. The total cost for the device is £240. With the £40 contribution from RET, this leaves £200 to pay. All payments will be managed via our cashless platform, ParentPay. 

Payment Plans

£20 deposit will be due at the sign-up stage, regardless of which payment plan is chosen; this will leave a balance of £180.

Frequently asked questions 

How do I reserve a Chromebook?

ParentPay activation codes will be issued before the end of term and an option will be available on parentpay.com for payment of the deposit. A Chromebook Agreement will be issued with the activation details and should be signed and returned to the school as soon as possible. The document may be photographed or scanned and returned by email to finance@hartschool.org.uk if this is easier. Payment of the deposit together with return of the signed Agreement will reserve a device for your child. 

How will the device be used in the classroom?

As a tool to support and enhance learning and promote creativity such as accessing Office 365 documents, recording visual elements of learning such as role play or experiments. We seek to equip all our students with the necessary skills and modes of thinking so that they will succeed in a constantly changing society, where high levels of skill in the use of new technologies is the currency for employment. 

Will the device be used in all lessons? 

Not always. There will be times when it is not suitable, such as when students will complete practice exam question or, simply, when the learning is fit for purpose. There will also be the opportunity for students to decide which is the best learning tool for the job. For example, students may decide to simply take notes on paper rather than using their device. We are keen to develop independent learning skills and support students in finding their preferred learning and revision techniques. 

Will students still use pen and paper?

Students will be expected to write in some lessons therefore students will be writing notes on paper and practising their handwriting as they will face formal written exams in Y11. Students will be expected to bring black pens to school as they do currently. 

What technical support and training will be provided? 

Students are actively using Office 365 as part of their normal IT lessons and so are prepared for using these apps on their device. With the increased use of online apps including those available from Google they are increasing their knowledge of the available tools all the time. 

Where will my child store their device during PE? 

Students will leave their bags in the changing rooms as is current practice and rooms will be locked. 

What happens if the device goes wrong? 

The package includes 3 years’ ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION & warranty. Your device should be taken to the ICT technicians at school in the first instance who will investigate the fault. We will recommend either a warranty or accidental damage repair; depending on the circumstances. Repairs can take approximately 4 weeks.

Are there any restrictions on cover?

A maximum of 1 claim for accidental damage can be made per year during the coverage period.

After the claim is settled, cover for accidental damage does not apply for 12 months.
Cover is only available to businesses or residents of the United Kingdom, Jersey or the Isle of Man
aged 18 or over.

If you purchase the policy after you purchase the insured product no claims may be made during the
first 30 days of the policy start date.

What’s typically covered? (Accidental Damage Protection) 

Accidental drops, spills, bumps, and structural failures incurred under normal operating conditions or handling, including electrical surges and damage to the integrated LCD screen. 

Examples:  

  • Your system accidentally slips off the table and the LCD screen cracks 
  • An electrical surge causes significant damage to your PC’s hardware during a lightning storm 
  • The coffee spills on the keyboard and the extent of damage is unknown 

What’s not covered? (Accidental Damage Protection) 

Cosmetic damage, equipment loss or failures due to usage outside of normal operating conditions. Any data loss or interruption of business, intentional damage and misuse, removal or alteration of parts, accessories, theft, damage from fires, damage to peripherals or third-party products. 

Examples: 

  • The outer case cracks but your system still operates effectively 
  • You’ve left your device behind on the bus 
  • The system is used in the rain and you lose an entire day of productivity because your PC no longer functions 
  • The battery is misplaced

What if my child leaves the school? 

You must return the device to the school or alternatively pay the outstanding payments to take ownership of the device. 

Can we get a spare or replacement charger?

The device is equipped with a battery that is more than capable of lasting the school day during normal use, therefore we recommend keeping your charger safe at home. Replacement/spare chargers can be purchased via the school’s ParentPay system. 

What is the device?

This year we are offering a Dell 3100. This is a future-proofed solution built specifically for education to withstand the rigours of the classroom and intense usage by students.
