SEND

The Learning Support Team is based within the main school building. It includes a dedicated intervention room to cater for student support for subjects across the curriculum.  The Learning Support Team is part of the School Inclusion Team which also includes the Pastoral Team.

The Learning Support Team is led by the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, Mrs Louise Taylor. Ms Rachel Wilkes the Assistant Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, Mrs Gliniecki and Ms Ingram who are two highly experienced Senior Keyworkers and 10 experienced and dedicated Teaching Assistants, make up the rest of the team.

The team aims to provide high quality support to all pupils with a range of special educational needs. These include learning, emotional and social difficulties as well as physical and sensory impairment. By working collaboratively with pupils, teachers, parents and the pastoral team, we endeavour to support students to overcome their difficulties and fulfil their potential. The academy SEN team work in line with the requirements of the current SEN Code of Practice (2014) when carrying out the duties towards all students with Special Educational Needs, the SEN Code of Practice gives statutory guidance on duties, policies and procedures.

Support is delivered with specific targets, as part of Assess, Plan, Do, Review, which students receive through both individual withdrawal lessons and in-class support, across the curriculum. In addition, we deliver small group and 1:1 intervention to develop reading, spelling and number skills.

All pupils with SEND have the right to an inclusive curriculum, which allows them to access First Quality Teaching in all of their lessons. This is essential if pupils are to progress.

Our teachers will use various strategies to adapt access to the curriculum, this might include using:

  • Visual timetables
  • Writing frames
  • Chromebooks, laptops or other alternative devices
  • Peer buddy systems
  • Positive behaviour rewards system
  • Use of a reader/scribe
  • Extra time to complete tasks
  • Rest breaks
  • Writing breaks
  • Writing slopes
  • Differentiated questions
